About Stone International

The head office of Stone International is located in Mumbai, the Capital of Maharashtra State, India.Stone International was established in the year 1981 as a proprietorship concern of Sunil Chowdhary, primarily for exports of Indian Natural Stone slabs and tiles. Gradually we added more products in the natural stone trade to include monuments, road construction and garden & landscaping items.

After liberalization of the Indian economy in 1991 Stone International started importing natural stone products and accessories from other countries for sale in India. With the Indian economy growing leaps and bounds, we have diversified into trade in minerals and metals and also provide business auxiliary and support services to businesses that desire to outsource some of their non-core functions.

Over the years, we have developed expertise and specialize in many functions that are idiosyncratic to international trade. We offer our services to customers in India as well as overseas and have established long term relationship with many companies that focus on strategic initiatives after having outsourced some of their non-core functions to us.

The Gateway of India, Mumbai, was constructed in the early 20th Century. The stone used for construction is geologically termed as Trachyte and it is more popularly known as the Malad Stone. The Gateway of India Monument (photograph alongside) is a heritage structure built in the early 1900s. It is located in Downtown South Mumbai, the financial hub of India. We have not placed this image to show you the monument itself. Most of you who have visited Mumbai are familiar with this magnificent structure. Our interest in this structure that we would like to highlight to you is the massive natural stone blocks used in the construction. This stone is known as the Malad Stone and it is quarried (believe it) within the city limits of what is now Greater Mumbai. During the early 1900s (British Rule) Malad was out of Mumbai Municipal Limits. Now it is very much within the city limits of Greater Mumbai Metropolis and amongst the largest residential localities in Mumbai. Till today some quarries do exist in this area as well as Kurla (another suburb of Mumbai). However, this stone (petrological name trachyte) is widely used for repairs and reconstruction of existing heritage structures that have used this stone during initial construction in the Victorian Era. There are a few new buildings that have also used this stone that can be processed into tiles / slabs with modern machinery.

Surat was the coastal gateway to the Mughal Empire when they ruled India during The Medieval Era.Our Branch office is located at Surat, Gujarat State. Surat is the largest centre in the world for cutting and polishing diamonds. Bulk of the worldwide demand for cut small diamonds below 1 carat in size is processed in Surat. Surat is also the largest centre in India for processing synthetic textiles. The city of Surat is located on the banks of the River Tapti (aka Tapi) about 20 kms (13 miles) from the estuary where the River Tapti meets the Arabian Sea. This estuary of the River Tapti is shared by Surat and Navsari districts and the estuarine area houses many aquaculture ponds for shrimp farming. This is the part of the fisheries business in the Gujarat Coast. Gujarat State has the longest coastline in India. Surat was a major port on the Gujarat Coast during the Mughal Era.
